THE extent of interest in next month’s local government election in Greater Lithgow was clearly evident by the turnout to a Meet The Candidates session on Thursday night.
It was virtually a case of standing room only in the auditorium at Club Lithgow, a response not lost on the candidates.
Head of the Country Labor ticket for the September 8 election, Wayne McAndrew, said there had been just a small turnout to a similar forum prior to the last council election four years ago.
He was encouraged to see the real interest in the community this year.
The session was again organised by the Lithgow Business Association to enable candidates to introduce themselves and briefly state their ambitions for the next term of council.
Not all of the 40 candidates were present but all groups and the three independent ‘below the line’ candidates were represented with the sole exception of the group headed by Cr Martin Ticehurst.
Head of the DLP ticket, Anthony Craig, was in East Timor with a volunteer nursing group and another team leader, Ray Thompson, was a last minute no show due to urgent family business in Sydney.
Both submitted written statements which were read out by the LBA’s Glenda Anthes.
Number two on Cr Thompson’s ticket, Michael Alexander, outlined his policies.
Altogether 21 candidates took the opportunity to address the gathering.
They were all given an attentive hearing by the big crowd with no heckling evident.
LBA secretary Glenda Anthes said the organisers were delighted with the response.
“It’s good to see so many people interested in the future of our phenomenal district community,” she said.
She said it was disappointing that only one group had not responded to the invitation to take part.
A RESUME of comments by the candidates will appear next week in the Lithgow Mercury.
ELECTION DRAWS LOT OF INTEREST: It was case of ‘get in early for a seat’ when a large crowd ignored the winter chill to hear from the Lithgow Council election candidates at Club Lithgow on Thursday night. Lm081712LAlgmeeting
