BATHURST Regional Council will assist the Bathurst Remembers project so more film footage of Bathurst can be placed on YouTube and Google.
Resident Bruce Ryan has spent years working on the project, which has resulted in an extensive recorded history of Bathurst and some of its major events.
He requested a $5000 donation from council to help him take excerpts from that footage and to put them on the internet to create greater interest in Bathurst. The extracts will be in a variety of formats but will predominantly feature on YouTube.
A collection of Bathurst Remembers DVDs are available to the public through Bathurst Library.
While support for the project was strong, there was considerable debate in the chamber about where the money should be taken from, given the small amount of money left in the 356 donations fund.
Cr Monica Morse felt the project should receive $2500 and that it should be taken from the promotions and publicity budget, but general manager David Sherley said that budget doesn’t have much money in it.
He added that it is appropriate that the money be taken from the 356 community donations fund. However, Cr Morse stressed that the project does not benefit a community group, but council, and the finished product is in council’s library.
Cr Bobby Bourke felt it was important to pay the full $5000 up front.
“This is a great project. To give him half is a job half done,” Cr Bourke said.
“If we are going to do it, do it. He’s given council a lot of assistance.”
Cr Tracey Carpenter said it is critical to get this information onto the internet because it is the only platform people relate to now. She asked if council could work with Mr Ryan to upload the material through council facilities, perhaps with CSU student help.
Mr Sherley said council did not have the resources to help.
Ultimately council decided to fund the project from the 356 donations but spread it over two years.
Mr Ryan will receive $2500 in the 2012/2013 financial year and the new council will vote on whether to allocate a further $2500 in the 2013/2014 financial year.
